 Starbucks' New Holiday Drink Is Shockingly Not *That* Unhealthy

Starbucks is notorious for its calorie– and sugar-packed beverages. Case in point: their Insta-worthy unicorn frappuccino or their equally social media–worthy Witch’s Brew that was a total hit this Halloween. But to ring in the holidays, the coffee giant has opted for a healthier take on their new seasonal beverage. (ICYWW, here are the healthiest things you can find on the Starbucks menu.)

Dubbed the Juniper Latte, the festive new drink features flavors of juniper and sage with notes of citrus, according to a recent press release. A grande will only set you back 260 calories—and that’s if you use 2% milk. You’re more than welcome to swap it out for skim, soy, or almond milk. That being said, with 37 grams of carbs and 7 grams of fat, the drink still has a lot of sugar—35 grams to be exact. (P.S. The American Heart Association says women should cap their daily sugar intake at 25 grams.)

Even so, those numbers pale in comparison to a lot of the other seasonal lattes Starbucks is offering. The Caramel Brulée Latte? 43 grams of sugar and 66 grams of carbs. Eggnog Latte? 52 grams of sugar and 57 grams of carbs. Not to mention the Juniper Latte offers up a solid 12 grams of protein. (FYI, the average woman only needs 46 grams of protein a day.)

Y’all already know my #basic ass had to get one! This #juniperlatte wasn’t what I was expecting, but it’s nice to not have a sickeningly sweet drink from #starbucks for once! TL;DR, we’re not saying this thing is healthy for you. But if you’re craving a seasonal latte as one often does this time of year, it’s not the worst one for you either. Keep in mind that as with all Starbucks seasonal drinks, the Juniper Latte will only be available for a limited time while supplies last.
