COVID-19 is all over the news and you can’t stop thinking about it. (I certainly can’t either; I’m a doctor.) At the same time, summer is here, and you are ready to get out of the house and enjoy some sunshine. Here are the places to avoid to protect yourself from coronavirus during the warmer months ahead—and how to behave if you absolutely must go.
At the Pool/Club House
Now that some aquatic venues are open in some areas, it is crucial to understand that public spaces add another layer of potential contamination. Although there is no evidence that COVID-19 spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs, we should proceed with caution about going to public aquatic venues. While using pools this summer, avoid common areas such as shared locker rooms, steam rooms, and saunas. If you decide to jump on a pool this summer, understand that It is difficult to “social distance” at the pool and you cannot wear a mask.
You have done everything possible not to get sick so far. Now that the restrictions are looser, you are ready to mobilize again. Be aware that closed places such as the subway or the metro can increase your chances of getting sick.
Going on a Hike
If you and your buddies decide to do social distancing hikes, beware of the packed trails. There have been multiple reports of hikers not wearing masks endangering everyone, including at-risk rural communities.
In some states, you are now finally able to get your pedicure and manicure, but remember that the first COVID-19 case in California happened at a nail salon. Wear masks, gloves, be mindful of others around you, and proceed with caution.
You are young and survived a pandemic and likely ready for a tattoo. That close contact leaves nothing to safety on social distancing. Is a tattoo worth the risk?
This is probably the longest time you’ve spent without a haircut, and you are ready for a freshen up. If you must, avoid big and crowded venues, wear masks, and request that everyone around you is wearing one too.
Going to the gym has never been more complicated. You want to make sure you keep your health and fitness in good shape, but crowded gyms are not going to get you there.
If you want to be on the safe side of the curve, do at-home workouts at your neighborhood park or community court. Packed gyms with groups of people heavily breathing can wait.
If you are ready to get your eyebrow done, take heed. If you are subject to a sneeze or cough from someone that close to you, there’s little that will prevent an infection.
Clothing and Shoe Stores
Most retailers are closed, but if you are planning to hit the shops as soon as they reopen, wear gloves and discard them after use. Stores tend to have a single line and be sure to keep 6 feet apart while wearing masks.
Now that some businesses reopen, if you must use the restroom, wash your hands before and after using the toilet, and do not forget to use a paper towel to open the door.
