As COVID-19 cases rise at an alarming rate in states like Florida, Texas and California, the Coronavirus Task Force took the stage for the first time in two months to deliver a briefing—and a stark warning. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said the country would be “seeing more deaths”—and that the nation’s millennials had a responsibility to save lives.
“The overwhelming majority of people who are now getting infected are young people, like the people that you see in the clips in the paper or out in the crowds enjoying themselves,” Fauci said. In the news over the past month have been photos of young people at the beach or an outdoor music festival, and a video was widely circulated of people at a large pool party in the Ozarks.
“The thing that you really need to realize, that when you do that you are part of a process, so if you get infected, you will infect someone else,” he added.
The CDC Director Also Appealed to the Youth
CDC director Robert Redfield agreed with Fauci and said young people need to take social distancing and face coverings more seriously. “I also want to appeal to the millennials and those that are under 40 — it’s really important that this group really commit themselves to these practices to protect those at risk,” he said.
Added Vice President Mike Pence: “If there’s a message that comes through today, I hope it is saying to younger Americans in these states and in these countries in particular that they are a big part of the numbers that we are seeing in new cases.”
The Task Force members are hardly the only ones to worry about that demographic. “Officials in some states with expanding outbreaks, such as Florida and Texas, have pointed to the shift in infections toward younger people as an indication that the states are effectively protecting their most vulnerable residents. But Fauci said a backdrop of greater infection means more risk for everyone in the community,” reports CNBC. “The young people who are infected and don’t know they’re infected … they may be inadvertently infecting the people who are susceptible to greater complications. Then you start seeing greater hospitalizations and deaths,” Fauci told the network. “It may take a few weeks, but we’ll see that and that’s my concern.”
“There are more cases. There are more hospitalizations in some of those places and soon you’ll be seeing more deaths,” he continued.
New Testing Method Sought
At the conference, Fauci also “said that the White House coronavirus task force is ‘seriously considering’ pool testing for COVID-19 and acknowledged to The Washington Post that the Trump administration’s current testing strategy has proven inadequate. The proposal is still in the discussion stage, Fauci told CNN, and it was not announced at a task force press briefing on Friday afternoon,” according to the network.
Although he hopes for a vaccine by the end of the year or early next, none is available now. So wear your mask, wash your hands frequently, practice social distancing and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don’t miss these Things You Should Never Do During the Coronavirus Pandemic.
