Actually getting around to doing outdoor household chores like mowing the lawn, pulling those unsightly weeds out from the flowers you may have on your front lawn, and even cleaning the gutters isn’t necessarily at the top of anyone’s priority list. They are called chores after all—so it comes as no surprise most people put them off as long as possible. But what if we told you that actually staying on top of these household chores could help you lose weight?
A new study that was conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Draper Tools found that homeowners on average burn more than 80,000 calories a year just by working in the garden and doing DIY tasks around their house. The study surveyed 2,000 homeowners to be exact, and it found that these homeowners spent an average of 165 hours each year doing things to maintain and fix up their homes.
Although most participants in the study said they don’t view yard work as actual exercise, it actually can help you burn enough calories to offset if you ate more than 300 Big Macs. For reference, 300 of these burgers adds up to 165,000 calories so just let that sink that. Everything from mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, pruning, and watering a garden can end up burning thousands of calories a year. But there is a catch: you need to make sure you do this all consistently throughout the year. Even if you just stick with only mowing the lawn, you’ll burn more than 4,100 calories. Not too bad, right? If you’re more of a gardening fan, that can help you burn off more than 3,100 calories, according to the study.
The upside of these activities is that they take a decent amount of time, too. The homeowners who took part in the study spend nearly 700 minutes watering their gardens every year and more 700 minutes mowing lawns. It’s no wonder you’re truly working up a sweat!
And think about it, during a time like right now where you’re still spending most of your time at home and you’re unable to go to the gym, there isn’t much of an excuse as to why you can’t spend more of your time doing things around the house. So the next time you’re fully dreading these household chores, keep in mind how these actions might just help you reach your weight loss goals.
