We’ve known since the early stages of the pandemic that obesity has a significant impact on the severity of COVID-19 complications. In fact, in September 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded their list of risk factors to include simply being “overweight” as well. Every additional pound, it seems, can potentially exacerbate your symptoms of this deadly virus.
Considering four out of ten Americans are currently obese, this is a major issue right now—which is why a group of actors and comedians from some of your favorite TV shows have come together for a PSA video about the dangers of obesity as it pertains to the severity of COVID-19 infections. (Related: Why Obesity Is So Dangerous With COVID-19).
The 60-second spot, created by The Creative Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy organization of the arts and entertainment community, features Emmy Award-nominated actor and the organization’s president Tim Daly, Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris, Law and Order’s Tamara Tunie, The Good Doctor’s Nicholas Gonzalez, Community’s Yvette Nicole Brown, and Emmy Award-winning comedian Judy Gold.
In the PSA, each actor explains that obesity is the number one risk factor for developing a severe case of COVID-19 in people under 60. (That said, there are many other pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and others that can make your symptoms worse, and even potentially lead to hospitalization.) The actors urge those affected by obesity to check in with their healthcare provider to learn what they can do to protect themselves during the pandemic.
The PSA is part of The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative, which aims to show how the arts can bring social welfare issues to light.
