“We are at a crossroads right now,” said Dr. Fauci. “We are doing very well with regard to the rollout of vaccine. And yet we are seeing in the country that there are several states in which the numbers are going up. When we had the big peak in the winter, during the holidays and beyond, then it came down. We would have liked to see it go all the way down to a very, very low level—we don’t know what that number is probably less than 10,000 per day. Right now it’s up at a high enough level. That in fact, if you look at the weekly average, it’s starting to creep up. We’re at a critical turning point. Every day, we get better and better at being able to control it because every day three to 4 million people get vaccinated.”

Currently, 60,000 new infections are being added daily. “We are in a race between vaccinating as many people as quickly and as expeditiously as we possibly can and the threat of the resurgence of viruses in our country,” Dr. Fauci stated. “Because as we know, we’re at a precarious situation with many States having increases in the daily number of cases.”

Dr. Fauci discussed the vaccines, mentioning that they offer “at least the six month duration of protection, very likely much longer than that, but at least that.” However, he did note that the variants do complicate things a bit. “The good news is that one of the variants that’s becoming dominant in this country, the B.1.1.7 which was originally recognized in the United Kingdom is very well covered by the vaccines that we are using. And in fact, even with others that are more problematic, if the vaccine doesn’t protect against the initial infection, it protects against severe disease,” he said.

Dr. Walensky also noted that keeping with the fundamental prevention methods is as important as ever. “We are expanding the reach of life-saving COVID-19 vaccines and improving vaccine confidence. As of April 14th, more than 194 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered,” she said. “However, to end this pandemic, we must also maintain proven effective prevention measures, masks, hand, hygiene, and physical distancing.”
