If you recently bought plant-based cheese, take note: The brand that made a cashew cheese has issued a voluntary recall of all its products after five customers have reportedly fallen sick with Salmonella. Interviews from an investigation led by the FDA and CDC point to this particular brand of vegan cheese as the only common product that the interviewed parties consumed.

We often educate you about the benefits of a plant-based diet, but keeping yourself and your family safe always comes first. A report has emerged that Jule’s Foods, the makers of plant-based cheeses, has issued a recall of all of its products because, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s website, the food “was potentially contaminated with Salmonella.”
The brand lists five cashew cheeses in six-ounce units as the products they’re recalling, regardless of the expiration date:
Jule’s Cashew Brie (Classic) (UPC: 860388001507)
Jule’s Truffle Cashew Brie (UPC: 860388001514)
Jule’s Black Garlic Cashew Brie (UPC: 860388001552)
Jule’s Artichoke Spinach Dip (UPC: 860388001569)
Jule’s Vegan Ranch Dressing (UPC: 860388001521)
Jule’s states that the cheeses were sold direct to consumer, as well as at “primarily independently owned grocery stores” in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas.
If you’ve eaten any of Jule’s Foods cashew cheese, the FDA’s website lists a few symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning you might watch out for:
“The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated product. Most people recover without treatment. In rare circumstances, infection can produce more severe illness and require hospitalization. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.”
Jule’s Foods says production of the cheeses has been suspended while they work with the FDA to determine the source of the Salmonella issue. If you have the cashew cheese at home, they advise: “Please do not consume the product and immediately dispose of the product or return to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
